Two different questions
An Ethernet speed test answers: “What is my ISP link delivering to the router?” A Wi‑Fi speed test answers: “What does my laptop get through the air?” Mixing them up causes endless ISP vs router arguments.
Always capture both when possible. If Ethernet hits ~90% of plan speed but Wi‑Fi is half, fix wireless first.
Common Wi‑Fi bottlenecks in Indian homes
Old routers stuck on 2.4 GHz, walls, microwave interference, too many clients, and dual-band steering issues are frequent. Mesh nodes help large flats; a cheap ancient router will not magically deliver gigabit to a phone across two rooms.
- Retest near the router on 5 GHz/6 GHz if available.
- Update router firmware; reboot ONT + router before blaming the ISP.
- Forget the network and reconnect; avoid crowded channels.
When to call the ISP
If Ethernet tests are consistently far below plan at multiple times of day (and VPN is off), document screenshots from a free internet speed test like MySpeedTest.in and share them with support. Evening congestion is real on some networks — testing at 11pm and 11am helps show a pattern.
