Download speed in plain language
Download speed is how quickly data comes to you — opening websites, watching YouTube, installing games, loading Instagram. Speed tests report it in Mbps (megabits per second). Higher is better for big files and 4K video.
Many Indian broadband plans advertise download heavily because that is what users notice first. But a plan with weak upload can still feel “broken” on calls.
Upload speed — the quiet hero
Upload is how quickly you send data: Zoom/Meet cameras, WhatsApp video messages, cloud backups, live streaming, and sending large PDFs. If upload is low or unstable, your face freezes on calls even when download looks fine.
As a rough guide: casual browsing barely needs upload; HD video calls often want several Mbps up with low jitter; creators uploading 4K footage want much more.
How to read both on a speed test
Run a free internet speed test and note download and upload separately. If download is strong but upload is a tiny fraction of your plan, ask your ISP whether the plan is asymmetric by design (common on cheaper tiers) or whether there is a line issue.
